GOAL 3: PRIORITIZING ACTIVITIES
Organization Will Help You
IMPORTANCE
To prioritize activities students should use a ranking system.
Ranking system is split into four parts:
1.Ranking of general aspects of life:(sports, school, social life, family)
·Based on students’ front-end analysis results
·Create a baseline foundation of how to start ranking individual items
2. Ranking of activities within each subset
3. Ranking activities in terms of importance weekly
4. Ranking activities in terms of importance daily
REAL LIFE USE
A student athlete who plays for the university football team and is currently enrolled in 15 units this semester or the equivalent of 5 classes. Let’s assume this student devotes 25 hours per week to football. We will also assume this student is a science major. Below is a mock schedule of classes and assignments along with sports and social obligations:
Biology 120 (1 assignment due weekly and 3 tests)
Calculus 330 (1 assignment due daily and 3 tests)
Research Methods 410 (2 tests and 1 final project)
Speech 101 (1 assignment every 2 weeks)
English 220 (Weekly reading assignments, 3 term papers)
Football: practice, weights, meetings, games (25 hours weekly)
Social Events (concerts, parties, club meetings, etc.)
CONT.
Given this example this student could effectively rank how to devote time to each class based on how assignments are distributed. Classes should be ranked by assignment frequency with a number 1-5, 6-7 are allotted for sports and social events. Also a color should be devoted for each class.
Biology 120 (Red)
Calculus 330 (Blue)
English 220 (Green)
Speech 101 (Purple)
Research Methods 410 (Black)
Football (Orange)
Social Events (Yellow)
Keep in Mind
Now that we have an established ranking system, we will shift to the use of tools to explain the utilization of these rankings as an effective method for time management.
Remember these rankings, because they will be used in the next two sections of the instructional module regarding: the use of daily planners, and mobile devices.
